 A Message from the Chairman and CEO At Lockheed Martin, we are committed to protecting the environment and ensuring the safety and security of our employees, stakeholders, customers and neighbors. Fulfilling this commitment is no small task. It requires our management team to guide our operations and the development of our products in the safest ways possible. It requires a strong and effective internal Environment, Safety and Health (ESH) organization. And, most importantly, it requires participation from every single employee. We are fortunate to have in place all of these essential elements. Each year, we set goals and objectives to reduce injuries and accidents, energy usage, waste and our carbon impact on the environment. We integrate these goals into our regular business planning and day-to-day operations so that they remain "front and center" - as important to our business as sales and profit. Our proactive approach is making a difference. Thanks to our comprehensive safety program, called Target Zero, we reduced our accidents by 48 percent in four years - from 2004 through 2007. We protect the environment with the same vigor. As one example: Lockheed Martin has invested $40 million in energy efficiency programs that save 125 million kilowatt hours of energy annually - enough to power 10,000 homes - and reduce our carbon dioxide emissions by 96,000 metric tons.
