Lockheed Martin Introduces High-Speed Sortation System for Commercial Mailers
System features a patented gate system and enhanced feeder; provides mailers a robust sorting system specifically designed for incoming mix mail
ANAHEIM, CA, September 11th, 2000 -- Commercial mailers no longer have to compromise on product sorting needs, thanks to a robust, high-performance system now available from Lockheed Martin Distribution Technologies. The ST3000 Industrial Sorter System¿, introduced today at the National Postal Forum here, is capable of sorting up to 15,000 items per hour based on size, shape and thickness of product or document. The sorter's innovative design combines the newly announced Flats Feeder 200¿ System from Lockheed Martin Distribution Technologies with a patented high-speed gate system. It was specifically developed for flexibility in handling a wide mix of product from letters to thicker items such as flat mail, compact discs, license plates and courier packs at high speeds and without damaging the items. Designed for product distribution applications, the contemporary ST3000 sorter significantly improves the speed and accuracy of commercial sorting operations. Typical applications for this solution include incoming letter and flat mixed mail, interoffice mail, outgoing flat mail and product distribution. "The innovative design of this new sorter is an example of our proven software and hardware technologies that have been configured as a total solution to meet our customers' most challenging applications," said Bob Huff, vice president of Product Development for Lockheed Martin Distribution Technologies in Owego, N.Y. "The development of the ST3000 Industrial Sorter System shows Lockheed Martin's commitment to provide customer value with products that meet the growing demands for automation," noted Huff. "Our latest sorting solution is a direct result of listening to our customers for the need of a true flats-processing capability that also has the flexibility to fit dynamic markets. This effort culminates years of development and more than 20 patent applications by our engineering and manufacturing groups from Distribution Technologies operations in Owego and Tulsa, Okla." The new sorter can be equipped with a wide-field-of-view Flats Optical Character Reader (OCR) from Lockheed Martin to read a 15-inch by 15-inch image. This advanced OCR system reads both printed and handwritten images to solve even the most difficult recognition challenges. The ST3000 system also was designed to support the Incoming Mail Management Software (IMMS) solution from Lockheed Martin. "This advanced directory management system can significantly improve the speed and accuracy of your mailroom sorting tasks, and is a key element of our incoming mail solutions," Huff said. Because the ST3000 augments mailroom automation, it can be easily equipped with printers and tag readers to allow local video encoding of images. In addition, bar code readers and other product validation options are also available to support unique customer needs. Lockheed Martin provides a one-year warranty and follow-on service options to meet long-term needs. The ST3000 can process products ranging in size from four inches by four inches to 15 inches by 15 inches. The unique design of the ST3000 allows feeding, transporting and accurately sorting irregular shaped objects without jamming or damage.
