Lockheed Martin Donates $21,000 to Two Local High Schools in Support of Engineering Curriculum

Archbald, PA, February 4th, 2010 -- Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] donated $8,000 to the Forest City school district in Forest City, PA, and $13,000 to the Lakeland school district in Jermyn, PA, in support of a pre-engineering curriculum called Project Lead The Way.

Project Lead The Way is a national, not-for-profit educational program that gives middle and high school students the rigorous ground-level education needed to develop strong backgrounds in science and engineering.

For the 2009-2010 school year, their second year with Project Lead The Way, the Forest City school district offered courses such as Introduction to Engineering Design and Flight & Space, which are part of the curriculum at the high school and middle school levels. A portion of the $8,000 grant received will go toward the high school Engineering Club and help prepare for the Pennsylvania Project Lead The Way Design Competition to be held in February 2010.

The Lakeland school district implemented its first Project Lead The Way course to 9th and 10th grade students with Introduction to Engineering Design. The $13,000 grant will provide Lakeland the resources to continue the implementation and advancement of curriculum and extracurricular activities.

“Innovation, creativity and technology are keys to our long-term success as a nation, and Lockheed Martin is committed to these same principles," said Paul Laubham, director of Technical Operations of Lockheed Martin’s Archbald Operations. "That is why it is vitally important to share our expertise and highlight the importance of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) learning to students in our local communities. In order to accomplish this, Lockheed Martin engineers visit classrooms where they speak to students about engineering principles and college opportunities, as well as share their own education and career experiences. Company engineers also volunteer their time to mentor students with events such as FIRST Robotics, National Engineers Week, Junior Academy of Science and Science Olympiad. We are excited to be able to invest our resources with the next generation of engineers.”

Across the Corporation, engineers are working with educators to bring STEM principles into classrooms in interesting and relevant ways as part of its Lockheed Martin Engineers in the Classroom initiative and Project Lead The Way’s business partnership team.

A business partnership team is a Project Lead The Way requirement to establish a partnership between the school and business community. Lockheed Martin engineers have volunteered to participate on the team to serve as student mentor/advisors. In this capacity, engineers will assist technology teachers to continue developing and inspiring students into college engineering programs. The engineering-focused curriculum of Project Lead the Way, which complements math and science college preparatory programs, is the basis of Engineers in the Classroom, Lockheed Martin’s innovative K-12 education outreach initiative designed to develop the next generation of engineers.

Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin is a global security company that employs about 140,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. The Corporation reported 2009 sales of $45.2 billion.
