 WINDTRACER DOPPLER LIDAR

 WindTracer Doppler Lidar

WindTracer® Collects Wind and Wake Vortex Research Data

Developed and produced by Coherent Technologies, WindTracer® Doppler light detection and ranging (LIDAR) system is used for airport applications, wind resource assessment and meteorological research. WindTracer LIDAR is a remarkable technology that detects the wind activity and provides advanced warning of wind hazards such as wind shear—defined as sudden changes in wind speed and direction over a relatively short distance. The data from WindTracer is vital during dangerous weather conditions and is used to prevent wind shear-related accidents. WindTracer is installed at numerous airports, continuously scanning the approach and departure corridors and enabling the air traffic control personnel to offer precise, timely direction to pilots during their most critical phase of flight.

The system is also used by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to conduct wake vortex detection and tracking for consideration of future Flight Rule changes. WindTracer currently performs wake-related functions at three U.S. airports and has been chosen as the primary tool for measuring wake vortices at airports in New York, London, Frankfurt and Paris. To improve the detection of hazardous winds, FAA has also purchased and installed a system at Las Vegas McCarran International Airport. Other systems for wind shear alerting are installed at airports in Hong Kong and Tokyo.

The latest application of the WindTracer product is in the wind energy market for wind resource assessment. WindTracer provides wind resource analyses over large spatial areas during site prospecting and wind power production assessments.
