| Built on Experience, Powered by Innovation A balanced space architecture with the ability to quickly field both large and small satellites is becoming a critical capability for the warfighter. Reducing satellite size is important, but it is not just about size and weight. The key is keeping cost and schedule down, while sustaining performance and reliability. To meet this emerging customer need, Lockheed Martin Space Systems is actively maturing technologies through internal research and development (IRAD) to eliminate cost, schedule and weight drivers and improve satellite performance. With this dedicated approach to innovation, backed by extensive small sat experience, Lockheed Martin provides a wide range of capabilities to meet any customer mission focus - large, small, micro or nano. Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company maintains a team of more than 40 engineers devoted to small spacecraft development. Since 2000, the team has worked on the XSS-11, Mitex and internally funded programs. To date, Lockheed Martin has designed, built and launched over 150 small satellites, 100 percent of which have met or exceeded their design life. Lockheed Martin's small satellite heritage demonstrates the capability to field highly innovative, reliable space systems rapidly and at very low cost. Combining this small satellite heritage with internal research and development, Space Systems has advanced new technologies that will decrease the size, complexity and cost of satellite development. These new innovations include micro propulsion development, miniature integrated avionics, model based spacecraft software, and much more. Small, responsive satellite systems are an important part of the space architecture, but Lockheed Martin does not look at the missions necessarily as small satellites. Looking at every satellite from the customer's perspective, Lockheed Martin builds reliable spacecraft for customer requirements for any mission focus, big or small - and we do it by leveraging unmatched expertise gained from more than 50 years of mission success experience.
