Ballistic Missile Defence

UK Missile Defence
Lockheed Martin UK - Ampthill has a long history of involvement in Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) programmes and is a founder member of the UK Missile Defence Centre (MDC), a joint initiative to advise UK Government on BMD policy, that involves both UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) and Industry.

Architecture Performance (Operational Analysis)
Lockheed Martin UK - Ampthill develops and uses in-house 6-DoF trajectory models, Post Boost Vehicle (PBV) dynamics, aerodynamic and aero-thermal environment predictions, vehicle structural and thermal response models.  These along with the modelling of Thermal Protection System performance, the prediction of RF and particularly EO signatures have enabled development of RV and countermeasure designs.  Design considerations include definition of deployment sequences, release limitations and operational envelopes, motion parameters and signature characteristics.  Additional supporting expertise includes strategic and theatre BMD battle models and architectures, interceptor lethality modelling and the ground effect assessments of chemical biological weapons.

Hardware and Flight Programmes
Lockheed Martin UK -  Ampthill currently designs and manufactures RV targets for US Missile Defence Agency (MDA) flight tests.   In addition, Lockheed Martin UK - Ampthill has designed and developed BM countermeasure payloads, designed to characterise signatures and test discrimination algorithms.
