LOCKHEED MARTIN MANAGEMENT & DATA SYSTEMS RECOGNIZED AS LEVEL 4

KING OF PRUSSIA, PA, December 16th, 1998 -- "Lockheed Martin Management &Data Systems (M&DS), headquartered in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania and a $1billion, 5,500-employee business unit of the Lockheed Martin Corporation(NYSE: LMT), announces that it has achieved the Software Engineering Institute(SEI) Level 4 recognition. This significant accomplishment demonstratesManagement & Data Systems' ability to develop software in a professional, highquality, low risk manner. To achieve the SEI Level 4 recognition, Management & Data Systems had tosatisfy 303 requirements. Only 2 percent of software companies have defined,institutionalized, and quantitatively managed a standard software processwarranting the SEI Level 4 recognition. Meeting the Level 4 standardsdistinguishes M&DS in the Information Technology marketplace and confirms thecompany's strong emphasis on continuous process improvement, according to MarcHansen, President of the firm. The software assessment standard was developed by SEI at Carnegie MellonUniversity. The standard, called the Capability Maturity Model (CMM) forSoftware, provides a framework for organizing continuous process improvementinto five capability levels. For Level 4, the Management & Data Systems'assessment consisted of a review of procedures and project documents, followedby a series of intensive interviews with numerous M&DS managers and processpractitioners. Following the SEI specified appraisal framework, the SEIassessment was performed by a 5-member team, led by Technology & ProcessConsulting, Inc., a professional technical services firm with an in-depthperspective on what is required to leverage technology, build infrastructure,achieve reuse, increase productivity and improve quality across theenterprise. The assessment team also included an independent SEI-certifiedassessor and two individuals selected by M&DS' "Best Practice" Process ControlBoard.
