OWEGO, NY, March 15th, 1999 -- Lockheed Martin Postal Systems has completed nationwide delivery of the Mobile Data Collection Device (MDCD) system that will allow the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) to provide its customers with end-of-day delivery confirmation for Express Mail, Priority Mail, parcels and accountable mail, such as certified and registered mail. Under a $250 million contract, Lockheed Martin deployed 300,000 hand-held scanners and installed associated computer infrastructure systems in 36,000 USPS facilities across the nation. The MDCD scanners were deployed at a rate of approximately 8,000 units per week. "This is a significant achievement for us," said Dr. Michael B. Schoultz, president, Lockheed Martin Postal Systems. "Completion of the MDCD deployment further demonstrates our capability to manage large-scale systems integrationand deployment programs on schedule. In turn, the end-benefit is that delivery confirmation now allows all USPS customers to receive easy-to-access, timely information confirming the date and time of delivery of all accountablemail." In daily use since April 1998, Lockheed Martin's MDCD system has proven to be a sturdy, reliable, easy-to-use information technology solution for the USPS, meeting all performance specifications. Its deployment was completed in approximately ten months.
