LOCKHEED MARTIN OR&SS SIGNS CONTRACT FOR ROMANIAN VESSEL TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
SYRACUSE, NY, November 23rd, 1999 -- Lockheed Martin Ocean, Radar & Sensor Systems (OR&SS) today announced that it has signed a contract with National Company Constanta Maritime Port Administration S.A. to provide a Vessel Traffic Management Information System (VTMIS) to monitor maritime traffic at the Port of Constanta on the Black Sea in Romania. The contract value is in excess of $2 million. Constanta is Romania's largest and busiest port. When the system is operational, VTMIS operators will be able to monitor all vessel traffic with the goal of improving safety and security and optimizing overall port operations. The Constanta VTMIS will use the latest MTM100 software by Lockheed Martin to provide an "expert" surveillance system and reliable monitoring capabilities by means of integrated, state-of-the-art sensors.
In the near future, it will be possible to exchange information with other Black Sea ports that have similar systems. An OR&SS maritime security system is operating in the Republic of Georgia and OR&SS soon expects to sign a contract with the government of Turkey for a VTMIS to monitor vessel traffic in the Turkish Straits in Istanbul and the approach to the Black Sea.
"OR&SS has the best system for monitoring safety, environmental protection, security, law enforcement and optimization of port operations, " said Kevin McSweeney, marine traffic management director. "We are pleased to add Romania to the list of countries we are helping."
OR&SS already has similar advanced VTMIS in China, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Republic of Georgia, Egypt, Singapore, Argentina, Algeria and Panama. In addition, OR&SS has been selected by the United States Coast Guard to provide vessel traffic systems throughout U.S. waterways.
A leader in ground-based and airborne radar, surface vessel and submarine electronic warfare, minehunting systems and vessel traffic management, Lockheed Martin Ocean, Radar & Sensor Systems serves customers including all branches of the U.S. armed forces, the U.S. Coast Guard, the U.S. Departments of Commerce, Transportation and State, and defense and transportation departments of countries on six continents.
