Lockheed Martin Employees and the National Park Service Unveil The Valley Forge Muster Roll

KING OF PRUSSIA, PA, 10/27/2000 -- Lockheed Martin Management & Data System (M&DS) employees and the National Park Service today unveiled the Valley Forge Muster Roll. This is the first automated record of nearly 30,000 soldiers who served at Valley Forge during the Revolutionary War. With 150 employees, state and local officials and the National Park Service, the unveiling was held at the Valley Forge National Historical Park Visitor Center in Valley Forge, PA. During the past year and a half, more than 30 employees from Lockheed Martin M&DS donated over 2,000 hours and worked with park officials to computerize thousands of historical documents containing the soldier's information. The information, which was collected over the last 50 years by park volunteers and staff, was entered into a database called the Valley Forge Muster Roll.

This is an important and seminal milestone for the National Park Service in its effort to enrich the story of the Valley Forge encampment by giving life to the individual Continental Soldier. The Muster Roll project has breathed life into the Valley Forge story and given human scale to the trials and accomplishments of the common soldier, said Arthur Stewart, superintendent, Valley Forge National Historical Park.

Through computerization, Lockheed Martin volunteers have allowed the park to share this information with the world. The public will now be able to search soldiers' records at two interactive kiosks in the park's visitor center. In addition, the volunteers also constructed an Internet site (accessible at www.nps.gov/vafo/home.htm) that can interface with the database free from anywhere in the world.

Through volunteering, we are recognized as valued members of the communities where we live and work. It is the selfless giving of our employees that truly reflects the spirit of M&DS, I am very proud of their accomplishment, said Marc Hansen, president, Lockheed Martin M&DS.

Management & Data Systems has been a leader in systems integration, systems engineering, software development and program management in support of vital national systems for more than 30 years. M&DS is a $1.5B unit of Lockheed Martin Corporation with approximately 7,500 employees at facilities in Pennsylvania, Arizona, California, Colorado and the Washington, DC metropolitan area.
