LOCKHEED MARTIN SPACE SYSTEMS ANNOUNCES WORKFORCE REDUCTION
NEW ORLEANS, LA., April 10th, 2002 -- Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company, Michoud Operations notified its workforce that about 325 jobs would be eliminated from the Space Shuttle External Tank project before the end of 2002. The reduction is necessary to meet funding levels resulting from NASA’s decision in 2001 to reduce External Tank production from eight per year to six.
Michoud Operations has also been informed of the potential for NASA to further reduce External Tank production. The workforce impact of this additional reduction is not included in the 325 positions announced today.
Positions to be eliminated in 2002 will come from all areas. Outplacement services will be available to assist those affected in finding new employment.
Michoud Operations currently employs approximately 2,200 employees at the NASA Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans, the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama and the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
Lockheed Martin has designed and built Space Shuttle External Tanks for NASA since 1973. To date, 116 External Tanks have been delivered.
