Lockheed Martin Successfully Tests ATACMS Block IA Unitary Missile With Upgraded Components and Software
DALLAS, TX, 13-APR-05 -- Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] successfully conducted the second test of a new upgraded guidance and control system and new flight software for the Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) at White Sands Missile Range, NM.
The test successfully validated the new guidance upgrade, which will be incorporated in the 2005 production line of ATACMS Block 1A Unitary missiles. Preliminary data indicate all test objectives were achieved.
“This new guidance upgrade will considerably enhance the accuracy and lethality of the ATACMS Block 1A Unitary missiles while reducing the risk of collateral damage,” said Scott Arnold, director - ATACMS programs for Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control. “This new technology will offer commanders on the ground an all-weather, all environment, quick reaction means of destroying precision area targets and precision point targets. The vertical impact capability and increased accuracy make this the ideal system to use in mountainous terrain and urban environments.”
The Army TACMS Unitary missile is a responsive long-range missile, with a blast fragmentation warhead fired from the Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) family of launchers, including the MLRS M270A1 launcher and the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS).
ATACMS, the first tactical surface-to-surface missile ever fired in battle by the U.S. Army, is a combat-proven evolutionary family of deep-strike missiles which achieved numerous successes in Operation Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). ATACMS variants include the Block I, Block IA, Block IA Unitary and the Advanced Concept Technology Demonstrations (ACTD) Penetrator.
