Lockheed Martin Canada Awarded Second Phase of Canadian Forces Health Information System Project
OTTAWA, ON, 20-JAN-05 -- Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] today announced it has been awarded the second phase of a multiyear contract to deliver a fully integrated electronic health management system for the Canadian Department of National Defence (DND).
The Canadian Forces Health Information System (CFHIS) project, awarded to Lockheed Martin Canada in 2002, is a 10-year $54.5 million CDN program designed to enable more than 2,500 Canadian Forces (CF) health personnel located in clinics across Canada to share information securely and coordinate care for 85,000 regular and reserve force personnel, anytime, anywhere.
“CFHIS benefits the CF health community as well as the Armed Forces personnel, ” said Martin Munro, general manager of Lockheed Martin Canada. “Until now, DND medical records were paper based and access to individual files was time consuming and inefficient. For CF members, the ability to transfer records electronically and coordinate care access regardless of location, while maintaining the privacy and confidentiality of that information, translates into better access and a higher quality of service.”
As prime contractor, Lockheed Martin Canada is responsible for the integration of bilingual software for medical and dental applications and making these records centrally accessible to authorized CF care providers within a secure environment. CF care providers benefit from CFHIS by centralized access to health information, with less data duplication and entry requirements, more timely access to information and the ability to share information quickly with other members of the care team.
The initial phase of the program, which was successfully completed in 2004, focused on the implementation of patient registration and scheduling capabilities at three Canadian Forces bases.
Phase II, which is the largest element of the program, has an estimated contract value of $31 million CDN and is expected to be completed by late 2006. The focus of the second phase will be migrating from current paper-based operations to a fully integrated system that will include scheduling and patient registration functions, clinical order review, pharmacy, laboratory and diagnostic imaging. Phase III, expected to commence in January 2007, will roll out clinical notes and orders and integrate management information system guidelines.
Lockheed Martin Canada leads a strong team of subcontractors, including Adstra Systems, DINMAR Consulting, Purkinje Inc. and SCC Soft Computer Consultants Inc.
