Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] has signed a lease to open a new work location in Frederick, MD, later this year. An initial workforce of over 100 employees from the corporation’s Transportation and Security Solutions (TSS) business unit is expected to move into the facility this fall.

Lockheed Martin anticipates over 500 employees could relocate to this new Frederick facility by the end of 2008. The business unit currently employs nearly 2,500 professionals.

“Our decision to establish a Frederick office responds to feedback expressed by our employees and reflects Lockheed Martin's determination to remain the employer of choice,” said Judy Marks, president of Lockheed Martin Transportation and Security Solutions. “In our efforts to retain and attract talented employees, we believe that a new office in Frederick will provide our employees additional options related to their balance between work and home. We are cognizant of the attractive housing opportunities in Frederick, the potential and significant reduction in commuting time and fuel costs for our employees living in the county, as well as the availability of Frederick County’s educated and highly-skilled workforce.”

Current employers located in Frederick cite the county’s “quality of life” as their top recruitment tool. But during week days, nearly one-half of Frederick County’s employed population leave the county to work elsewhere, according to statistics compiled by the Frederick County Chamber of Commerce. The commercial sector represents 17 percent of Frederick County’s total tax base, and occupies less than 3 percent of its land, according to 2004 statistics compiled by the Frederick County Office of Economic Development.
