Congressman Steny Hoyer Discusses the Importance of Combating the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) Threat

Patuxent River, MD, 08/07/2007 --

Gyrocam Systems had the opportunity to demonstrate its mast mounted gyrostabilized camera system to Congressman Steny Hoyer as well as Delores Etter, Assistant Secretary of the Navy for R/D and Acquisition during a recent SOCOM initiative.

During his visit to the NAVAIR Pax River, Congressman Hoyer examined the capabilities of the Gyrocam Triple Sensor camera system as well as the features of the RG33 armored vehicle. Impressed with the camera and its abilities, he stressed the importance of having and keeping these systems in Iraq and Afghanistan to combat the IED threat.

Over 200 Gyrocam mast mounted camera systems are currently fielded in Iraq and Afghanistan in the hunt for IEDs. Gyrocam has pioneered the use of mast mounted surveillance and IED detection. The original concept was proven by mounting the Gyrocam TS on an armored vehicle with a telescoping mast. This allowed the Gyrocam TS to be raised and operated while the vehicle was moving. Because the camera and mast are mounted on the exterior of the vehicle, the camera operator can view activities outside the vehicle, without being exposed to danger.

The Gyrocam TS is a state-of-the-art, sophisticated system which provides advanced infrared, NextGen gated NightVision and high resolution color imaging in a 15 gimbal. Because the unit is gyrostabilized, movements and vibrations inherent with an image captured from a camera on a moving platform are eliminated, rendering clear and stable images.
