Six students graduated from the program and two will receive a scholarship to Prince George's Community College and the University of Maryland.
The Academy, founded in 2003 by Linda Gooden, Executive Vice President, Lockheed Martin Information Systems & Global Services (IS&GS), in partnership with Potomac High School of Oxon Hill, Md., promotes higher education in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM.) Graduates of the program who seek degrees in STEM subjects are provided a scholarship to Prince George's Community College for a two-year degree, and then to the University of Maryland to complete their four-year degree.
Lamech McLean and Tyshe Green are the first two recipients of the Math and Science Academy scholarship. Lamech is pursuing a degree in Engineering, and Tyshe has enrolled as a computer science major.
Wendell Rakosky, vice president of Human Resources for IS&GS' Enterprise Solutions and Services business unit, said, The Lockheed Martin scholarship was designed to help talented students pursue a degree in math, science or engineering. It's important to help these students transfer knowledge gained from high school into the corporate world. We look forward to continued investment in the program as we prepare future scientists and engineers for employment potentially with Lockheed Martin.
