Lockheed Martin Women In Engineering Day Inspires Young Women To Explore Engineering Careers
EAGAN, MINN, 11/14/2008 --
Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] recently introduced 124 young women from 14 local high schools to the exciting world of engineering during the company's eighth annual Women in Engineering Day event at its Eagan facility.
The 10th grade students were from Eagan, Bloomington Jefferson, Bloomington Kennedy, De La Salle, Apple Valley, Richfield, St. Francis, Eastview, Edison, Henry, North, Roosevelt, South and Washburn High Schools.
The goal of this conference was to introduce young women to the exciting opportunities in the field of engineering. We were able to give them a feel for some of the innovative technologies used by engineers and an idea of the types of products that they could create, said Melonie Fischer, manager of the engineering leadership program at Lockheed Martin's Eagan facility. Our wish for each of these young women is that they not only left with a sense of excitement about science and technology, but with the desire to become a leading engineer in the future and ultimately join us at Lockheed Martin.
The event included sessions where participants explored different engineering disciplines – including electrical, mechanical and software – through hands-on activities. The students also participated in a team-oriented engineering project. During lunch, students had a chance to interact with a number of women engineers who shared their personal experiences and advice on how to pursue an engineering career. The day ended with an engineering design challenge. Students were asked to build their best gumdrop bridge testing different designs to see how many cans of tuna cans it could hold without collapsing.
I enjoyed Lockheed Martin's Women in Engineering Day. We had a lot of fun and the events and discussions opened my eyes about career possibilities I never considered before, said Becca Larson, a 10th grader from Eagan High School. I am now seriously thinking about an engineering career.
