Unmanned Systems Making the Grade at AAAA
Since ancient times, armies have sought to keep soldiers safe. Today, the U.S. Army is turning more and more to unmanned systems to reduce the risk to soldiers.
With a history in unmanned systems dating back to World War I, Lockheed Martin remains committed to helping the Army keep warfighters out of harm’s way. At the AAAA annual exposition, Lockheed Martin will showcase a variety of aerial products, including a number of unmanned initiatives.
- Used for more than 55,000 flight hours in-theater by Great Britain since 2006, the eight-pound Desert Hawk III unmanned aircraft system (UAS) features a hand-launched air vehicle with snap-on plug and play payloads, a portable ground station and a remote video terminal.
- Lockheed Martin and its partner Kaman developed the K-MAX UAS for cargo resupply missions. K-MAX became the first unmanned helicopter to operate in-theater when the Marines began using it for cargo re-supply in Afghanistan last year.
- The LONGBOW UTA provides a two-way data link that enables AH-64D Apache helicopter aircrews to control UASs at long ranges and receive high-quality imagery back from them.
- A tethered aerostat-based system deployed by the Army since 2004, the Persistent Threat Detection System (PTDS) provides long endurance intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and communications to coalition forces in Afghanistan.
- Using a combination of 20 percent classroom and 80 percent hands-on instruction, Lockheed Martin has trained more than 1,000 soldiers on how to operate the Raven, a hand-launched, small UAS with a range of 10 km.
- Lockheed Martin incorporates synthetic aperture radars onto existing UASs and provides fully integrated, transportable and fixed ground stations for UAS command and control. Fielded ground systems are fully supported with logistics, training and documentation.
