Microgrids address the constraints of a reliance on fossil fuel in remote locations. Dependency on fossil fuels and unreliable grids endanger military missions, especially at forward operating bases, which are key strategic resources serving as staging centers for defense operations. Along with these increasing energy risks and the growing operational importance of these installations, we recognize the limitations in reducing these risks, accomplishing these new missions and meeting the ever more challenging statutory and regulatory energy and environmental mandates, which for U.S. military include*:
- Advanced metering by 2012
- 30% energy reduction by 2015
- 30% non-tactical petroleum reduction by 2015
- 25% renewable source generation by 2025, 50% of which must be produced on-site
- 34% non-combat greenhouse gas reduction by 2020
