Green Procurement
Green Procurement is the purchase of environmentally preferred products and services. An “Environmentally Preferred” product is a product that fulfills one or more of the following criteria:
- Products with recycled or recyclable content
- Products that are energy and water efficient
- Bio-based products
- Alternative fuels
- Fuel-efficient and alternative technology vehicles
- Products that minimize toxic and hazardous ingredients
- Products that minimize packaging waste
- Regionally sourced products to reduce transportation costs.
Green Procurement can apply to office products, printing services, electronic equipment, fleet vehicles, appliances, lighting, construction, renovations and maintenance, and more.
As part of the Green Procurement Plan at Lockheed Martin, the purchase of the above products supports our waste, water and carbon reduction goals, as well as customer flow-downs for Green purchasing and LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Green Building Rating System™) certification pre-requisites. Pending confirmed cost competitiveness and quality performance, environmentally preferred products and services may be considered as the first choice in procurements.
WASTE REDUCTION
Preferred Packaging
Proper product packaging is an integral part of the successful transportation and delivery of any business’s shipped products. Improper packaging can lead to costly problems for both the shipper and the customer, and excessive packaging leads to increases in the flow of waste to landfill. Our objective under this Greening the Supply Chain focus area is to encourage preferred packaging techniques aimed to reduce packaging waste and minimize environmental impacts whenever feasible.
Preferred packaging materials are typically made from renewable and/or recycled sources; manufactured using clean production technologies and sustainability principles; made from materials healthy in all probable end-of-life scenarios; designed to optimize materials and energy; and effectively recovered and utilized in biological and/or industrial cradle-to-cradle cycles. Some examples of preferred packaging materials include the following:
- Cushioning materials - cellulosic paper, fiberboard and biodegradable bubble wrap
- Bagging materials - reusable bags, paper, bioplastics and recyclable plastics
- Exterior packaging materials - pallets, wood boxes and wood crates
In addition to supporting Go Green reduction goals, improved packaging provides other benefits through the use of renewable and locally sourced materials, as well as the efficient use of transport and storage space. All packaging systems must be compliant with existing contractual and technical (i.e., engineering) requirements and must protect the part to prevent damage.
Lockheed Martin’s Sustainable Packaging Guidelines can assist our suppliers with proper packaging techniques to prevent damage and reduce packaging waste that is disposed in landfills.
Green Cafeterias
A significant waste stream identified within Lockheed Martin is cafeteria waste. Through the sharing of best practices, Lockheed Martin cafeteria managers have implemented local recycling partnerships at their facilities, and leveraged cafeteria service provider initiatives to significantly reduce waste to landfill.
Supply Base Sustainability
Our suppliers have a direct influence on our carbon emissions and waste generation. Working with them to procure environmentally sound and efficient products is a vital step in meeting our overall Go Green reduction goals.
In keeping with our reputation for corporate responsibility and stewardship of resources, Lockheed Martin partners with its extended supply chain to assess the alignment of sustainability initiatives of its supply base with the company’s internal sustainability initiatives. The primary objective of this Greening the Supply Chain focus area is to ensure alignment of the supply base’s social, ethical, environmental, and safety and health (ESH) responsibilities with Lockheed Martin’s goals and values.
