Air Dominance of the Future
The F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II – the world’s only 5th generation fighters – usher in a new era in fighter aviation. These aircraft go far beyond the legendary capabilities of the F-16, the world’s greatest 4th generation multi-role fighter, to revolutionize the battlespace and are the only fighters capable of surviving and defeating tomorrow’s threats. Much like the revolutionary change in capability when piston-driven fighters were replaced by jets in the 1950s, 5th generation fighters represent a quantum leap in air warfare capabilities. The unique capabilities these aircraft bring to the fight will ensure air dominance for the United States and allied forces for decades to come.
But our adversaries have been rapidly advancing their own defensive and offensive capabilities, making our air dominance research today vital to maintaining our competitive advantage in the post 2030 world. Air superiority is critical to maintaining peace around the globe. To ensure we stay ahead of the threats to peace, we’ve been working with the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy, and most recently the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), to develop technologies, concepts and operational analyses in the following areas: next generation air dominance platforms, electronic warfare, weapons, sensors, networks, cyber, precision navigation and timing, command and control ISR and space.
Air dominance of the future will include advanced tactical fighters working through an inter-connected data link system to share information. Advanced intelligence gathering capability with hyper-spectral sensors will be tied into that network to provide targeting information to a strike fleet using next generation weapons. The network will incorporate space-based intelligence to provide complete control of the air, space and cyber domains.
