Our sustainability strategy is embedded in our mission-ready business model and consistent with our commitment to always Do What’s Right, Perform with Excellence and Respect Others. At Lockheed Martin, we define sustainability as fostering innovation, integrity and security to preserve the environment, strengthen communities and enable responsible growth.
The founders of our legacy companies were aviators who studied fuel and flight sustainability to enable faster, safer air travel. Over generations we’ve unlocked ingenuity to make technological advances and improve environmental, social and governance practices. Our public reporting on environmental and safety performance began in 2007, and in 2011, expanded our focus to a list of performance indicators that are customary in sustainability reporting frameworks.
In 2012, we established a dedicated department, called Corporate Sustainability, which oversees strategy development by identifying high-priority issues with stakeholder input, shaping meaningful goals and objectives and mobilizing resources within the company to achieve them. Our approach allows for sustainability issues to become integrated into practices managed by various business functions. Strategically positioning the long-term sustainability of our core business is one of three individual performance considerations used to determine the executive compensation of our chairman and chief executive officer.
