Tell me a little about ForwardEdge ASIC, a Lockheed Martin company.

ForwardEdge ASIC LLC is a newly formed, wholly owned subsidiary of Lockheed Martin Corporation. This company is focused on enhancing Lockheed Martin’s position on ASIC capabilities for commercial, defense, security, and on-shore design by delivering relevant, innovative, and affordable solutions with a single design pass.

Why is Lockheed Martin establishing this new company?

By establishing ForwardEdge ASIC (FEA), we are able to better focus on our microelectronics technology, IP, employee experience and compensation while managing costs, allowing us to deliver the best solutions to our customers.

What technologies do you work with, develop, and advance?

Technologies we focus on include the following:

• ASIC & FPGA Intellectual Property development    • Vertically integrated ASIC design
• Analog, digital & mixed signal chiplets    • ASIC integration
• Leading edge packaging technology    • Validation and Characterization
• High bandwidth secure encryption & decryption    • Software & Firmware
• SoC design, testing, HVM ramp and support through EOL      • Radiation Hardened designs

FEA will be developing IP, ASICs, SoCs, ASSPs utilizing the major North American Fabs (Intel, Global Foundries, SkyWater) to support Lockheed Martin projects in Space, Aeronautics, Defense and a host of commercial customers.

FEA will be developing IP to include the following:

• High Speed I/Os    • High Speed I/Os for DDRx and LPDDRx
• Clocking circuits & Phase interpolators      • ADC, DAC
• SERDES    • High Speed PLLs
• Sensor and transducer signal conditioning      • Power circuits

FEA will also be partnering with Intel on IP and ASIC designs on Intel’s 16nm, 7nm, 3nm, 20A (2nm) and 18A(1.8nm) Process nodes. The 20A and 18A nodes implement the breakthrough RibbonFET transistor architecture. Along with these new technology nodes, Intel’s PowerVia will be utilized in FEA’s new IP and ASIC designs.  This via technology is a first of its kind in power delivery, provides a frequency boost at the IP level and reduces power leakage by utilizing nano TSVs which are 500x times smaller than current TSVs.

The FPGA and chip design future roadmaps include the following designs:

  • UCIe SERDES Chiplets
  • SoC designs: Integration of PCIe, Ethernet, ARM and RISC processors, Sensors, Photonics, Crypto, etc.
  • Heterogeneous SIP (System In Package) combining sensors, proprietary ASIC, FPGA, CPU, GPU, memory and I/O
  • ASICs – Rad-Hard (Radiation Hardened) designs
    • Medical equipment and systems
    • Lunar and deep space exploration
    • Satellites for early- warning weather, climate observation, GPS and Imagery
    • Technology refreshes on older designs
    • Design solutions to update circuits and modules for Space and Aircrafts.

What EDA tools will be used?
