Ground forces across the globe have come to rely on the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS®) for its accuracy and its reliability.
HIMARS is the most technically advanced, affordable and sustainable artillery solution, providing cutting-edge technology on an indigenous platform.
In service since 2005, the launcher has demonstrated its capability and reliability throughout nearly two decades supporting U.S. and international partners in combat operations all over the world. With its adaptable capabilities and ongoing integrations and advancements, this launcher is in high demand throughout the U.S. Army, the U.S. Marine Corps, and many of our Allies and global partners. With the U.S. Army committing to its use through 2050, HIMARS will continue to be produced for years to come.
On Sept. 28, the 500th HIMARS launcher rolled out of the Precision Fires Center of Excellence. Thousands of hours of manpower helped make HIMARS what it is today.
Meet one of the many talented people working on the HIMARS program: Don Carkin, who started as a co-op with the program in 2000 and now works as a manager on the Engineering Integrated Product Team.
What’s your role?
I’m responsible for ensuring resolution of all mechanical, electrical or other technical issues at suppliers or on the production line.
What does it mean to the program to be able to celebrate 500? Why is it so significant?
The celebration of our 500th unit speaks to the longevity, reliability and continued relevance in supporting our country’s warfighters and allies. Our product reliability and capability has not only been maintained but continues to adapt to the needs of our warfighters. They count on our product and we always ensure that it will be ready in their time of need.
What’s your favorite thing about working on the HIMARS program?
I love working with a team that is committed to providing a top quality, affordable solution. Everyone on our team understands the importance of our product to support our nation and allied partners. Sometimes we receive customer feedback from the field that the use of HIMARS directly protected our troops, assets, and allies. These are the reasons that we all work so hard to deliver this capability and it keeps us going.
What would you say is the culture like on the HIMARS team?
The HIMARS culture is second to none. Everyone works well together and goes the extra mile to ensure the success of program deliverables. When we face challenges like the global pandemic, the whole team rallies together to resolve any issue quickly and minimize impacts to schedules while always putting the integrity of the product delivered as the top priority.
In your opinion, what makes HIMARS stand out from other products?
Our system reliability is outstanding. HIMARS is ready to support our warfighters’ needs on time, every time.
