Built on the legacy of the basic C-130 design, the C-130J-30 has an additional 15 feet/4.6 meters of space.
Primary components include:

Because of its cargo hold’s size and versatility, the C-130 has been used to transport a number of items besides troops and pallets of supplies.
Over its career, the C-130 has transported everything from a circus to a polar bear to boats, helicopters and smaller airplanes, to priceless works of art. Once, when it really mattered, the C-130 airlifted 452 people to safety.

Mid-fuselage is the official beginning of the C-130J's final production process. From this position, you can see through the cargo hold of six C-130J's (all variants are built on the same line) all in varying stages of production.
Mid-fuselage integrates 15 major component sub-assemblies, with stages of production linked via a motorized track and trolley system.
At this point, the C-130J’s floor (manufactured in Meridian, Mississippi), forward, side and top panels (manufactured in Greece), wheel well, aft side and aft top panels (manufactured in Johnstown, Pennsylvania) are installed, as is the center wing, plumbing, electrical wiring and landing gear.

Mid-fuselage wiring installations start here, which includes the sidewall and center wing tunnel electrical harnesses and interior lighting.

Near the C-130J production line is the center wing production line. This is where all C-130 new and replacement Center Wings are manufactured.
The C-130J’s center wing is what is known as a “dry” wing that requires six auxiliary fuel cell bladders that are installed during the mid-fuselage stage. Once the bladders are installed, the center wing can hold 1,800 gallons of fuel.
Each center wing is the same size (37 feet/11.3 meters in length). About 38,000 total fasteners are installed in every center wing.

No matter the variant, all Super Hercs are workhorses that support multiple missions for its operators. While there are nine different C-130J production variants, the Super Herc is certified to support 17 different operator requirements.
One of the reasons the Hercules is so versatile is thanks to its cargo hold, which can be reconfigured to support these missions in a short amount of time.
These Hercs can go from fighting fires to functioning as a flying hospital to transporting vital supplies thanks to the space in its cargo hold and its roll-on/roll-off capabilities.
There are rollers under this flat floor that expand the Super Herc’s capabilities by allowing modular mission rapid reconfiguration.
Super Hercs offer operators an Enhanced Cargo Handling System that makes this reconfiguration a fluid transition between missions. The loadmaster just turns the floor panels over to use the rollers, which help systems and cargo simply “roll-on” and “roll-off” the Herc.

Only two pilots are required to fly the C-130J while one loadmaster manages the cargo hold. This represents a 30% reduction in crew compared to legacy C-130s due in part to the digital automation found in the C-130J’s integrated avionics.

The C-130J Super Hercules is produced in two basic fuselage versions: standard and extended length.
The standard fuselage aircraft is the same size as a majority of the legacy C-130s and is now the configuration for the KC-130J, HC-130J (U.S. Coast Guard and Air Force) and MC-130J (U.S. Air Force).
These aircraft are 97 feet, 9 inches long and are used primarily for aerial tankers, personnel recovery/search and rescue, and Special Operations aircraft. The shorter variants can carry up to six standard 463L pallets.
The extended fuselage aircraft, also known as a C-130J-30 stretch (pictured here), has an additional 15 foot fuselage segment and is 112 feet, 9 inches long. The J-30 can accommodate up to eight standard 463L pallets. The stretch version is used primarily for cargo delivery, airdrop, personnel transport, and paratroop missions.
A majority of all military C-130Js delivered are C-130J-30s. The LM-100J commercial Super Hercules is the same length as the C-130J-30 and is an FAA-certified commercial freighter.

The C-130J Super Hercules is the most advanced and powerful C-130 ever produced, thanks in part to its significantly improved powerplant.
Every C-130J is powered by four Rolls-Royce AE2100D-3 engines and four six-blade composite propellers manufactured by GE-Dowty Aerospace. The engines also feature a quick-change nacelle manufactured by GKN in England.
The engines are manufactured at the
Rolls-Royce facility in Indianapolis, Indiana.
These parts are shipped to the Marietta site and prepared for installation in the Engine Shop, which is located across from the C-130J production line.

The C-130J’s cargo bay is at truck-bed height, so it does not require any specialized loading equipment.
Over its career, Hercs have hauled helicopters, troops, and vital supplies all over the world as well everything from a circus to a killer whale to horses, bears, eagles, and even a giraffe.

The C-130’s cabtop work areas are where one of the most visible aspects of the Super Hercules comes together ... literally.
The C-130 cabtop is part of the forward fuselage production stage, which consists of eight positions where thousands of holes are drilled and hundreds of small parts are installed.
The cabtop is built in two pieces: the top and the bottom. The top is seen here and this component will eventually house the digital glass flight deck instruments that are operated by a two-pilot flight crew.

The aft fuselage and empennage stage consists of five positions, with the installation of exterior panels and interior structure work mating taking place at this point.
The empennage includes the C-130J’s tail,which is built by a team at the Tata Lockheed Martin Aerostructures, Ltd., manufacturing joint-venture in India.
It’s during this stage where the C-130J-30 “stretch” aircraft are mated with the aft plug segment, adding the adding 7 extra feet of length behind the wing (plus an additional 8 feet, forward of the wing) to the C-130J’s cargo hold increasing total length by 15 feet.
The additional 15 feet are very important as it offers the C-130J-30 the ability to carry 30% more passengers and cargo, 44% more paratroopers, and 50% more CDS bundles compared to legacy C-130s that are shorter in length.

The aircraft is rolled out of the building and across the production aisle for its final two phases of production in the B-1 building.
Leak Test: This is where the C-130 is sprayed with water to check for pressure leaks. A mobile sprinkler system is used to identify leaks, with drains installed beneath the aircraft on the floor.
Final Trim: This is where the C-130J receives its final trim work and inspection. Custom fabricated insulation blankets, which are cut and sewn by a team in B-1, are installed at this point.
Once complete, the C-130Js are towed out (or roll out) of the B-1 building and head over to the Flightline, where the Super Hercs are painted, weighed and balanced, and move into Flight Test.

The final positions of the line are home to very important phases of production.
Final Avionics & Engine Hang: The engines and avionics equipment are installed, with software loading, initial power-on taking place, and the installation of flight controls (ailerons and flaps)
Functional Test: Functional tests are performed on all aircraft systems including landing gear, cargo door and ramp, hydraulics and the flaps.
Company & Customer Shake: Lockheed Martin and customer representatives fully inspect the aircraft, to include final quality and FOD (Foreign Object Debris) checks.

The is the area where the two pieces of the forward fuselage are mated.
The forward fuselage is built in two pieces. The bottom is built upside down, flipped over and then mated with the cab top.
While there are many different production variants of the C-130J, each Super Herc’s cabtop is the same size. There are special components to each variant’s cab top, which includes specific radar equipment or modifications to support inflight refueling.

This is what the C-130J’s flight deck looks like with its night vision (NVIS) lighting. Since the C-130 flies in all-weather situations around the clock, NVIS lighting is essential for pilots flying night missions.
Pilots wear night vision goggles (NVG) when using NVIS systems to view displays without any interference.

This is where three main body components (aft fuselage, mid-fuselage and forward fuselage) of the C-130J are joined.
The sections are modular, with all wiring and plumbing installed prior to reaching body mate.
It takes one day to attach (seal and fasten) these three components together.
Every C-130J has six miles of installed wiring. All wiring is prepared and assembledby a team co-located in the B-1 building.

Welcome to Lockheed Martin’s Flightline in Marietta, Georgia!
Once a Super Herc reaches the Flightline, it starts to look a bit different than it did on the production line. The aircraft’s protective coatings are removed and team transforms the C-130J with the application of its official livery or paint scheme.
Each operator has a unique paint scheme. Military operators generally include the name of the operators and specific markings, which can include operator-unique symbols and roundels.
Roundels may include operator colors or insignias. In the case of two C-130J operators, animals are part of the rondel: the kanagaroo for the Royal Australian Air Force and soon, the kiwi bird for the Royal New Zealand Air Force, which announced its acquisition of five C-130Js in 2020.
Aside from new paint, C-130Js go through series of critical phases on the Flightline, to include engine runs, fuel checks and, eventually, first flight. The aircraft are flown through a series of flights supported by Lockheed Martin and customer crews.
Upon the competition of flight tests, the C-130Js are delivered to their operators and go to work!
This Super Herc is a C-130J-30 “stretch” variant assigned to the U.S. Air Force. The U.S. Air Force operates the largest C-130J fleet in the entire world.
