From First Response to Precision Agriculture, New UAS Payloads Improve Real-Time and Recorded Data


Within every unmanned aerial system (UAS) is a payload with sensors and cameras that provide valuable information to its operators. As industries from agriculture to first response implement new unmanned technologies, Lockheed Martin Procerus Technologies introduced four new payloads to help operators accomplish their diverse range of missions with high quality, stable still images and video. The payloads feature technologies that reduce operator workload and improve situational awareness with real-time and recorded data.

“Whether the mission requires instant, high-definition video, or recorded video and still images, Lockheed Martin has a flexible payload offering that caters to customers in all segments,” said Jay McConville, director of business development for Unmanned Integrated Solutions at Lockheed Martin Mission Systems and Training. “From search and rescue, to pipeline inspections, to crime scene analysis, these payloads are engineered to operate in all weather conditions and provide a clear, stable image to operators.”

For live-streaming data needs, a new payload features a live video capability that enhances surveillance and search and rescue missions. The 720 pixels daylight video and 640 pixels long wave infrared video enables operators to make out facial features at a 1,000 foot standoff distance, or more than three football fields away. With an optical zoom that magnifies an image by 30 times, and three-axis mechanical stabilization, the payload can provide instant, streaming data in all weather conditions without compromising the quality of the footage.

When the mission calls for high-quality recording capabilities, another payload delivers this functionality for inspection and mapping missions, as well as crime scene analysis. Its 1080 pixel recorded video and 20 megapixel still images provide a high resolution result for operators looking for an eye-in-the-sky vantage point.

The third, multi-mission payload combines the capabilities to record and live-stream data with a smooth, stable video capability in any weather condition. It is capable of 10 megapixel still images, and onboard vision processing technology which provides a click-to-track functionality. When conducting surveillance or inspection missions, the payload reduces the workload of the operator with advanced autonomy. It also has a built in laser illuminator that allows users with night vision goggles to see targets for military missions, such as search and rescue.

This fourth payload provides an upgraded capability to current users of the Indago quad rotor. The enhanced gimbal delivers 16 megapixel still images, as well as high-definition 4K video footage. 4K video footage increases the amount of pixels of high-definition television by 450 percent, making data clearer and more actionable. Its two-axis stabilization enhances image and data quality for operators. This payload is capable of capturing still footage while recording high-definition 4K video in-flight and provides a composite video output for camera positioning.

Lockheed Martin Procerus Technologies produces the five-pound Indago quad-rotor that brings capability to firefighting, first response, agriculture and military operations. In 2015, Indago conducted its first real-world firefighting tasking in Western Australia to aid wildfire containment efforts by identifying hot spots and areas where people and property were at risk. Indago is also being used commercially to aid farmers in monitoring crop health with its high resolution imaging.
