Evolving HIMARS, GMLRS and TACMS for the Deep Battle


It’s the dead of night.

An aggressive adversary with a modern air defense system is firing relentlessly at coalition aircraft, preventing allied combat paratroopers from securing their objective. A call from Command seeks immediate support, and within minutes, two highly mobile High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) launchers move into position. The three-man crew is secure in HIMARS’ Improved Armored Cab, which consists of an appliqué armor that improves soldier protection, improved ballistic glass for better visibility and new shock absorbing seats.

Inside the first HIMARS launch canister are six Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS) rockets. Featuring a Global Positioning System (GPS)-aided inertial guidance package and small maneuvering canards on the rocket nose for maneuverability and enhanced accuracy, one-by-one the GMLRS rockets streak into the sky towards separate elements of the enemy’s air defense system.

From the second HIMARS launch canister, a massive 500-pound warhead resides in a long-range Tactical Missile System (TACMS) missile. The only long-range tactical surface-to-surface missile ever employed in combat by the U.S. Army, TACMS roars towards the enemy air defense site.

Within a matter of minutes, GMLRS and TACMS engage and destroy their individual targets, allowing coalition paratroopers to complete their mission.

Lockheed Martin’s HIMARS launcher is C-130 transportable, and can fire either GMLRS rockets or the long-range TACMS missile. Interoperable with a growing list of coalition partners, HIMARS takes advantage of multiple ISR data platforms, feeding time-sensitive targeting data to HIMARS commanders for immediate prosecution. The new Improved Armored Cab gives the crew unparalleled protection while executing their missions.

HIMARS has exceeded a whopping one million operational hours with U.S. and allied military forces since its initial fielding in 2005. HIMARS offers battlefield commanders an early-entry, “shoot-and-scoot” weapon that can provide intimidating firepower support for light forces

GMLRS is the primary round for the MLRS family of launchers. With a range of more than 70 kilometers, GMLRS carries a single 200-pound warhead, which helps reduce collateral damage in urban and mountainous regions. It is an all-weather, rapidly deployable, long-range guided munition that delivers precision strike beyond the range of most conventional weapons. Soldiers call it simply “a 70-kilometer sniper rifle.”

Lockheed Martin is currently producing the all new Guided MLRS Alternative Warhead round, which offers the same area effects as older submunition rockets, but without the danger of unexploded ordnance being left on the battlefield. The GMLRS Alternative Warhead round is an extremely precise area weapon that does not use submunitions.

TACMS is an extremely precise, long-range (300 kilometer) guided missile carrying a 500-pound warhead that gives commanders the immediate firepower to shape the battlespace. Almost 600 TACMS have been fired in combat operations, and the system has demonstrated extremely high rates of combat accuracy and reliability.

In December 2014, Lockheed Martin and the U.S. Army Aviation & Missile Command (AMCOM) signed a contract for a 36-month Engineering Manufacturing & Development (EMD) program to modernize TACMS and provide a capability enhancement. The electronics are being redesigned to mitigate obsolescence and provide the latest technology to the user.
