Denmark's F-35s in the Netherlands
May 13, 2026
For the first time, F-35 fighter jets from Denmark are in the Netherlands. The aircraft arrived at Leeuwarden Air Base today for the international Weapons Instructor Course (WIC).
News Release from Dutch Ministry of Defence:
The Netherlands and Denmark previously collaborated intensively on the F-16. That cooperation continues with the F-35. Dutch F-35 pilots already trained with their Scandinavian counterparts in their airspace last week. Denmark provided support with F-35s and dropped practice targets from a C-130 transport aircraft. This allowed Dutch pilots to practice their procedures and deployment.
The WIC demonstrates how important cooperation between European NATO countries is for the defense of the treaty area. During the training, soldiers learn, among other things, how various weapon systems and operational services can work together effectively. Participants are also trained to become tactical leaders at the highest level. By training jointly and deploying modern systems such as the F-35, NATO countries increase their striking power and readiness.
From Various Countries
Twenty-five Air Force personnel from Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Norway are participating in the WIC. It involves not only pilots but also officers and non-commissioned officers from other operational services. The training lasts six months and is provided by the Weapons School of the 323 Air Combat Development Centre at Leeuwarden Air Base. This center is the European knowledge center for tactical operations.
