The life cycle of the Fleet Ballistic Missile Program from Polaris A1 to the current iteration of the Trident II D5.

Lockheed Martin is the U.S. Navy’s strategic missile prime contractor, serving as the trusted prime flight system integrator since the development of the first sea-based deterrent system, the Polaris A1, in 1955. For more than 70 years, we have played a critical role in every deployed submarine-launched ballistic missile variant and generation. Today, we remain entrusted to support the next generation of the Navy’s Strategic Weapon Systems (SWS), including the Trident II D5 Life Extension 2 (D5LE2), built on a continuous foundation of delivery, execution and preparation to meet this unique strategic challenge.

The Current Mission ___

The Trident II D5 missile is the sixth generation in a series of sea-based deterrent systems deployed over the last 65 years.

First deployed in 1990, the D5 serves aboard U.S. Ohio-class and UK Vanguard-class submarines and is slated to remain in service into the 2040s.

We serve as an active partner to the U.S. Navy in the design, manufacture, assembly, testing, deployment and sustainment of the Trident II D5 system while activating and maintaining its associated support facilities.
