21st Century Warfare

21st Century Warfare

Our Vision for the Future

For generations, customers have counted on Lockheed Martin to help them overcome their most complex challenges and stay ahead of emerging threats by providing the most technologically advanced solutions. To align with the priorities of our customers in the decades ahead, Lockheed Martin has developed a concept for accelerating American and allied military modernization and preserving global deterrence called 21st Century Warfare.

Many of today’s military systems and platforms were designed to operate in a different technological era and are behind the digital connectivity found in everyday life. Through our 21st Century Warfare vision, Lockheed Martin is accelerating the adoption of leading-edge networking and related technologies into our national defense enterprise, while enhancing the performance and value of our major platforms.

Lockheed Martin has a rich history of pushing the boundaries of science and defining new eras from the earliest days of aviation through two world wars and the Cold War, into the Space Age and now the Digital Age. Because our portfolio spans every branch of the military, we have unique insights into the challenges and opportunities to enable joint all-domain operations by providing unmatched situational awareness, command and control across land, sea, air, space and cyber.

Lockheed Martin is partnering with defense and commercial companies to integrate legacy and future systems, and bring cutting-edge technology to the modern, highly contested battlespace.

“21st Century Warfare brings together the technologies being developed in the physical world – where the defense industry excels – and augments and accelerates those advancements with digital world technologies available in commercial industry. At Lockheed Martin, we’re working to build that bridge between industries so that we can tap into the technology, talent and investment to increase deterrent capability.“

– James D. Taiclet, Lockheed Martin chairman, president and CEO

Recently, James  D. Taiclet, chairman, president, and chief executive officer, joined Dr. John J. Hamre, president and CEO of the Center for Strategic and Studies and Langone Chair in American Leadership, for a conversation on the future of warfare. During the engagement, they discussed how U.S. technological and operational superiority are waning in the age of great strategic competition, making it essential to develop critical new capabilities, platforms, and programs.

Multi-Domain Solutions

F-35: The Key Node in a 21st Century Network-Centric Architecture

F-35 Contributions to Joint All Domain Operations

The F-35 is more than a fighter jet, it’s a powerful force multiplier with advanced sensors and communications suites operating close to the battlefield and from an elevated position significantly enhancing the capabilities of networked airborne, maritime, space, surface and ground-based platforms. By gathering, analyzing and seamlessly sharing critical data in the future Joint All Domain Operations (JADO) JADO battlespace, giving commanders unprecedented situational awareness and the confidence to act quickly.

The F-35 contributes critical analysis while sensing and fusing data, and in the near future sharing multi-source data seamlessly across networks.  This reduces decision timelines for the joint warfighters and enables sensor-to-shooter connectivity with unprecedented situational awareness within the Joint All Domain Operations (JADO) battlespace.

Lockheed Martin has partnered with our customers over the past several years to demonstrate the F-35’s network effect in joint warfighting  and advance JADO.
