The Future is Built by Those Willing to Fail Fast
LM Fellow Gus Anderson is building the technologies that will power tomorrow's missions.
From “wireless in the dark” to shaping Lockheed Martin’s tech horizon, Gus has spent two decades turning seemingly impossible problems into roadmap ready solutions. Gus began as a Drexel University graduate school researcher in the early 2000s, in partnership with ATL Advanced Concepts Lab (ACL) on a DARPA program that asked the question: how could the state of a wireless network be inferred when the opposite side was encrypted and inaccessible? That early entry into resilient, secure communications planted the seed for the career that would later define his work at Lockheed Martin.
After stints at other research organizations, Gus officially joined Lockheed Martin’s Advanced Technology Laboratories (ATL) in 2014. Over the next few years his blend of deep technical expertise, cross industry partnership, and a “fail fast, fail early” mindset led him through the ranks, earning him the prestigious LM Fellow title—a corporate acknowledgment of impact.
To Gus, being an LM Fellow means balancing four pillars of responsibility: research, thought leadership, technology, and partnerships. To succeed, he says must spot challenges 3‑5 years out and starts solving them now, so solutions are ready when those challenges are fully realized. According to Gus, success depends on uniting internal teams and external partners to shape a shared vision, maps collaborations across industry, academia, and Lockheed Martin, and converts that foresight into concrete roadmaps that become operational capabilities
Gus’s current focus is the Advanced Signals, Communications & Networking Technologies (ASCNT “ascent”) team, part of ATL’s Spectrum Systems Lab (SSL). The group sits at the intersection of signal processing, communications, networking, and sensing, leveraging commercial advances such as 5G to build communication systems that provide uninterrupted warfighter communications while also understanding and defeating adversary resilient networks.
Gus’s critical belief is that he wouldn’t have gotten where he is today if it weren’t for his coworkers and teammates. He calls the collection of engineers that he works with “rockstars”, praising his team for being “really good at what they’re really good at”. Gus also stresses the importance of mentoring those following in your footsteps. His mentorship philosophy is simple and sincere:
Beyond the technical realm Gus devotes his time to his wife and kids, attending church, and playing the guitar. He also enjoys martial arts, practicing various styles including Capoeira, Brazilian Jiujitsu, Judo and Moo Duk Kwan. Gus is also a published author of advanced communications papers, and lives by the principle, “If we cannot communicate the technology in a paper, we do not understand the problem well enough.”
Looking ahead, Gus hopes that the ATL mindset spreads throughout the entire Lockheed Martin community. He says,
