Test Early: A New Development Model
Lockheed Martin’s technology demonstration strategy skips the traditional early phases of government-led development and jumps straight to demonstrating an industry proposed solution. Rather than waiting for a customer to lock down a requirement, we invest ahead of need, rapidly iterating designs in partnership with government, industry and research institutions. These internally-funded operational prototypes are flown in the very environment where they will ultimately operate, generating real-world data that laboratories and simulations can’t replicate.
The result is a portfolio of “technology demonstrations” that prove integrated mission capabilities (not isolated parts) under authentic space conditions.
Learn Fast: Why Demonstrations Belong in Space
Simply, proven technology is trusted technology.
Operating a prototype in orbit reveals performance, reliability and integration challenges that ground testing cannot. The data from these flights validates hardware under thermal extremes, radiation, microgravity and real-time mission constraints. On-orbit demonstrations help shift the acquisition timeline from the phase of defining requirements upfront to proving capabilities in operational environments. By understanding real mission needs, evolving threats and system performance, organizations can mature technologies, refine requirements and bring validated capabilities to market faster.

Reduce Risk: Investment, Partnership and Production in Action
In our Space business, we have invested roughly $1B in R&D since 2024, including investments across more than a dozen operational space demos and plans to invest over $600M in just the next year alone.
The company leverages a network of partners, among them launch companies, bus providers and others, to accelerate timelines and ensure that our demonstrations align with real-world operational needs. Meanwhile, venture investments expand the ecosystem by surfacing emerging technologies for the demo pipeline.
In parallel, we are strengthening the industrial side of the equation through strategic collaborations with partners like Albany Engineered Composites (AEC). By combining Lockheed Martin’s proven systems integration expertise with AEC’s agile composite manufacturing, our team is uniquely positioned to accelerate the delivery of high-rate, mission-ready hypersonic capabilities at the speed and scale demanded by the U.S. Department of War.
Spanning facilities in Colorado, Alabama, Silicon Valley and more, Lockheed Martin manufacturing scales production to meet demand once a prototype successfully fields a capability.
Robust production operations – like the LM 400 satellite bus line at our state-of-the-art Gateway Center and our Small Satellite Processing and Delivery Center that houses six parallel production lines – demonstrate how rapid assembly and testing can transition a demo directly into a production line.
