Lockheed Martin Canada has been a sponsor of the STEAM Horizon Awards since its inception in 2016. Presented by Ingenium - Canada’s Museums of Science and Innovation and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada – the organization invites Canada’s youth to promote positive changes in their community using science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM).

The STEAM Horizon Awards consists of $25,000 scholarships for five exemplary students to use towards their post-secondary education in a STEAM field. The winners are selected based on their inspiring achievements in the fields of STEAM. These achievements may be formally recognized through a patented invention, or less formal through the founding of a local coding club. Two of the five prizes go to Indigenous youth, and all the winners reflect passion and illustrate a positive impact on their communities.

"Lockheed Martin Canada is very focused on driving more awareness of exciting careers in science and technology to build our future talent pipeline."

This year, because of the social distancing measures as a result of COVID-19, the in-person event was cancelled. But Ingenium rose to the challenge and was able to put together a spectacular virtual event. The event consisted of a panel discussion with the 2020 winners which was moderated by two previous winners. Sponsors and members of the STEAM community were then invited to log-on and watch the panel in real time.

Chief Executive Lorraine Ben was honoured to have the opportunity to engage in the panel by posing a question to the winners. She asked, “Lockheed Martin Canada is very focused on driving more awareness of exciting careers in science and technology to build our future talent pipeline – I’m wondering if you could recommend one resource – perhaps a book, podcast, or tv show - to other students interested in STEAM fields that might help further inspire them, what would it be?”
